England face Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, with Thomas Tuchel's side two games away from glory. Despite a wealth of talent in the squad, several high-profile players were left behind, including Cole Palmer, Harry Maguire, and Phil Foden.

Cole Palmer's Shock Omission

The Chelsea star's exclusion was the biggest surprise. Tuchel opted for Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze as No.10 options, with Noni Madueke as Bukayo Saka's understudy. Explaining his decision, Tuchel said: 'I think he suffers from a lack of individual form within his club. He was not as decisive or influential as he was in the last seasons. His record with us was just not outstanding.' Tuchel added: 'It was one of the most difficult phone calls. I refuse to bring players for the name.'

Harry Maguire's Public Disappointment

Maguire had a strong season at Manchester United and was recalled for friendlies in March, but was left out as Tuchel selected Marc Guehi, John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn, Jarell Quansah, and Trevoh Chalobah. Maguire voiced his displeasure on social media, saying: 'I was confident I could have played a major part this summer.' His family also criticized the decision, with his mother saying she was 'absolutely disgusted.' Tuchel responded: 'I was a bit surprised, but we stood firmly with our central defenders that carried us through September, October, November.'

Phil Foden's Form Drop

Foden's last Premier League goal for Manchester City came in December, with only three assists since. His absence barely registered among many. Tuchel noted: 'With Phil, he lost momentum in a crucial moment of the season. We could see glimpses but not a lot of evidence.' Despite being excellent in camp, Foden's club form cost him a place.
