Paul Mescal to Vanish Until 2028 for Beatles Biopic Role as McCartney
Paul Mescal hints at break from spotlight until 2028

Rising star Paul Mescal has indicated he may retreat from the public eye for several years as he immerses himself in one of the most significant roles of his career: playing Sir Paul McCartney in a series of major Beatles biopics.

A Cinematic Hiatus for a Major Role

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 29-year-old actor, currently promoting projects like The History of Sound and Hamnet, openly discussed his need for a pause. "People will get a break from me and I’ll get a break from them, over the next couple of years," Mescal stated. He reflected on being five years into his career, feeling fortunate but also recognising his limits: "I’m also learning that I don’t think I can go on doing it as much."

Mescal explained that intensive independent film work, such as his latest project where he stars alongside Josh O'Connor, can be more draining than audiences might anticipate. Despite this planned step back, his schedule remains packed with high-profile commitments, chiefly the ambitious Beatles film series and Richard Linklater's long-term project, Merrily We Roll Along.

The Fab Four Reimagined for the Big Screen

The actor's comments come after Sony Pictures officially confirmed the cast for its four highly anticipated Beatles films earlier this year, ending months of speculation. All four movies are slated for a simultaneous release in April 2028. The project, titled The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event, marks a historic moment as it is the first time the surviving Beatles and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison have granted rights for such feature films.

Mescal will take on the role of a young Paul McCartney. He will be joined by an impressive ensemble: Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. The films will each adopt the perspective of a different band member, charting their journey from Liverpool unknowns in the early 1960s to global superstardom and their eventual split in 1970.

Filming at Iconic Locations and Supporting Cast Revealed

In a significant development for fans, production is confirmed to take place at London's legendary Abbey Road Studios, with filming having commenced in November of last year. Contrary to earlier reports that Westminster Council had blocked plans to shoot on the iconic zebra crossing, the council has clarified it is working closely with the production team. Director Sam Mendes aims to recreate the Beatles' famous 1969 album cover, which will involve temporary road closures.

The cast extends to the pivotal women in the band members' lives. The actresses playing the Fab Four's wives have been announced: Saoirse Ronan will portray Linda McCartney, Aimee Lou Wood will play Pattie Boyd, Anna Sawai takes on the role of Yoko Ono, and Mia McKenna-Bruce will star as Maureen Cox. Mendes praised them as "four fascinating and unique figures" and expressed his thrill at securing such talented performers for the project.

As Paul Mescal prepares to step into the shoes of a music legend, his anticipated hiatus underscores the immense dedication required for this cinematic undertaking. The world may see less of him until 2028, but his return promises to be a monumental moment in film and music history.
