The new ice hockey romance series Off Campus, adapted from Elle Kennedy's book series, has taken social media by storm and set a new Rotten Tomatoes record as the highest-rated romance series of the past year. Released on Prime Video last week, the show follows college student Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) at fictional Briar University in Boston, who enlists hockey captain Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) to fake a relationship to attract another crush. Predictably, their fake romance turns real, but it is the steamy storylines and talented young cast that have fans buzzing.
Record-Breaking Success and Cultural Impact
Similar to fellow ice hockey drama Heated Rivalry, Off Campus is already causing ripples across the entertainment world. Canadian rock band The Beaches, featured in a pivotal scene between Garrett and Hannah, saw an 888% increase in weekly streams of their song "Edge of the Earth" since the show's premiere. Their entire discography has also surged, according to Billboard Canada, marking another milestone after their song "Blame Brett" went viral on TikTok in 2024. The band expressed gratitude for being included in the world of Off Campus, noting the song's special place in their hearts.
Celebrity Fans and Defying Gen Z Trends
The show has attracted famous fans, including Jennifer Lopez, who praised a scene recreating her iconic 2000 Grammys look. Lopez wrote on X, "Love this shooooww," quoting a fan who remarked on the intense chemistry. Off Campus, along with Heated Rivalry and Rivals, appears to defy the belief that Gen Z audiences demand less sex and romance on-screen. Heated Rivalry director Jacob Tierney explained on The Independent's Good Vibrations podcast that sex is used as storytelling and character development, allowing vulnerability and honesty.
Fan Reactions and Critical Acclaim
Fans are drawn to the slow-burn romances with meaningful glances and sweet moments, but appreciate that storylines are not unnecessarily dragged out. One fan praised Off Campus for not wasting time once the leads realized their feelings. Critics have been full of praise, with Variety noting the show doesn't reinvent the wheel but offers an interesting ride, while The Wrap highlighted its fresh take on consent and calling out toxic masculinity. The first series of Off Campus is now streaming on Prime Video.
