A Danish war film, originally released in 2021, has found new life on Netflix and is being hailed by critics as a 'cinematic masterpiece'. The Bombardment, also known as The Shadow in My Eye, tells the harrowing true story of a World War II bombing mission that went tragically wrong.
Directed by Ole Bornedal, the film focuses on Operation Carthage, a Royal Air Force (RAF) raid on Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen in 1945. However, the mission mistakenly targeted a Catholic school, resulting in over 120 deaths, including 86 children. The film's cast includes Betram Bisgaard, Ester Birch, Ella Josephine Lund Nilsson, and Malena Lucia Lodahl.
Critics have praised the film for its visceral and haunting portrayal of the tragedy. One review on Rotten Tomatoes described it as 'haunting and visceral, beautifully shot, and stays in your mind well after it's over'. Another critic noted that the film 'forces us to confront the full agony that results from any loss of human life'.
The film has achieved a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience rating of 90%. Audience reviews have called it 'gut wrenching' and 'one of the most amazing visual and narrative events I have seen on screen'. The Bombardment is now streaming on Netflix.
