Netflix's eight-part supernatural series Marianne, which holds a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has received what fans describe as 'the highest praise' despite featuring some 'disgusting' scenes.
Series Overview
The French-language Netflix Original, released in 2019, tells the story of author Emma Larsimon (Victoire du Bois) who reunites with a childhood friend at a book signing. Her friend reveals that the events from Emma's books are becoming real, and that her own mother believes Emma is the witch at the heart of them. Disturbed by this revelation, Emma returns to her hometown of Elden to investigate, triggering a devastating and gory chain of events.
Netflix's synopsis teases: 'When a horror novelist takes a break from writing, she discovers the demon from her book exists in the real world. This malevolent spirit named Marianne draws her home and insists she continues writing... or else.'
Critical Acclaim and Fan Reactions
Horror author Stephen King himself recommended the series to his followers, writing: 'If you're one of those sickos - like me - who enjoys being scared, MARIANNE (Netflix) will do the job. There are glints of humor that give it a STRANGER THINGS vibe. It also has (I say it with all due modesty) a Stephen King vibe.'
Fans have compared the series to Mike Flanagan's The Haunting of Hill House, Stephen King's IT, The Conjuring, and Sinister. One fan wrote: 'Best horror series on Netflix on the same level as Mike Flanagan's Haunting of Hill House… which is the highest praise I can give anything!' Another lamented: 'Years later and I'm still so furious this show was cancelled. Really, really well done- whip smart, funny, stylish touching, unsettling and truly scary. What I wouldn't give for someone/anyone to give this show the Season 2 it so richly deserves.'
A third viewer added: 'Effectively Scary Supernatural Horror. Fans of IT, Conjuring, Sinister and the like will enjoy this small town group of friends facing a returning evil.'
Cancellation and Conclusion
Despite its perfect critics' score, Netflix cancelled the show after one season. However, the series provides an adequate conclusion to most of its mysteries and story arcs. Marianne is now streaming on Netflix.
