Netflix's new true crime documentary series Worst Neighbor Ever has sparked intense debate among viewers, with many criticizing its use of animated re-enactments instead of traditional live-action dramatizations. The four-part series, which explores harrowing stories of neighbors terrorizing those living nearby, has drawn fire on Reddit, where some users declared they "hate" the animation style and switched off the show.
Viewers React to Animation Style
One Reddit user wrote: "I turned it off as soon as the animation started. I am very much not into it." Another added: "I couldn't even finish one episode of that series because of this. Odd choice on their part." A third commented: "The animations in these shows suck." Critics argue that the cartoon format trivializes serious subject matter. One viewer stated: "It makes serious stories not seem that serious. It has actually made me turn off some shows because I wanted to watch a true crime series from a mature perspective. Not a f****** cartoon for high schoolers." Another echoed: "If someone made a cartoon out of my loved one being hurt or killed, I would be very upset."
Defenders Applaud Creative Approach
However, other fans have defended the artistic choice, arguing that animation can be more effective than low-budget re-enactments. One supporter said: "Netflix has done this previously in other documentaries and I think it works and makes it easier to understand." Another noted: "I don't mind the cartoons, it's not like they are goofy or unserious, they are re-enactments and sometimes I prefer it rather than the real actors." A third fan concluded: "The animations are so much better than watching recreations! Great show."
Worst Neighbor Ever is available to stream on Netflix.
