Madfabulous review: Callum Scott Howells shines as flamboyant aristocrat in hedonistic period romp

Callum Scott Howells delivers a standout performance as Henry Paget, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey, in the new drama Madfabulous. Known for his role as the shy Colin in It's a Sin, Howells now transforms into a flamboyant Victorian aristocrat who squanders his inheritance on extravagant parties and gender-defying theatricals.

The film, written by Lisa Baker and directed by Celyn Jones, reclaims a forgotten chapter of queer history. Paget, a delicate consumptive and aesthete, scandalised society in the late 19th century with his lavish productions and provocative costumes, including a diaphanous veil worn as a 'butterfly dancer'. His unconsummated marriage to his first cousin Lily, played by Ruby Stokes, is portrayed with more affection than historical accounts suggest.

Rupert Everett excels as the fictional butler Gelert, evoking his previous role as Oscar Wilde in The Happy Prince. Paget's defiant public life unfolded while Wilde was imprisoned, and like Wilde, he ended his days in French exile. However, the film suggests Paget lacked Wilde's talent and prudence, living beyond his means in a narcissistic pursuit of spectacle.

Despite the fictionalised elements, Howells's strong turn anchors the film, offering a compelling glimpse into a forgotten figure of queer history.
