Oscar winner Laura Dern has joined the cast of 'The White Lotus' Season 4, replacing Helena Bonham Carter, who left the production last week. Series creator Mike White, a longtime collaborator and friend of Dern, quickly brought her on board to play a new character being developed specifically for her.
HBO stated that after filming began, it became apparent that the character created for Carter 'did not align once on set.' The role is believed to be central to the season's story, prompting a rework and recast. Dern emerged as a top choice, marking her latest collaboration with White after 'Year of the Dog' and the HBO series 'Enlightened.'
Dern is not new to 'The White Lotus'; she provided an uncredited voice cameo in Season 2 as Abby, the estranged wife of Dominic Di Grasso. Speculation about her involvement arose last July when she and White were seen together in Los Angeles during location scouting for Season 4.
Season 4 follows a new group of guests and employees at White Lotus hotels during the Cannes Film Festival. The cast includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, and others. Filming is underway on the French Riviera, with locations including Cannes, St. Tropez, and Monaco.
Dern's previous HBO work includes 'Big Little Lies,' 'Recount,' and 'Enlightened,' earning her multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards. She recently appeared in 'Palm Royale' and will next be seen in 'Peaked.'
