Taking on the Role of Kate McCann

As actress Laura Bayston steps into one of the most emotionally charged roles of her career in Channel 5's new drama Under Suspicion: Kate McCann, viewers are becoming increasingly curious about the woman bringing the infamous case back to the screen. The gripping programme focuses on one of the darkest chapters in the Madeleine McCann investigation when mother Kate was declared an 'arguido', or formal suspect, by Portuguese police following her daughter's disappearance in Praia da Luz in 2007.

While Kate and husband Gerry McCann were eventually cleared of any wrongdoing in 2008, the couple faced relentless scrutiny during the investigation, with Kate enduring hours of intense questioning as detectives pursued theories of a cover-up. Now, actress Laura Bayston has stepped into the difficult role, portraying Kate during the period Channel 5 bosses describe as one of the 'most shocking moments' in the entire case. But away from the emotionally heavy drama, Laura has quietly built an impressive acting career and lives a far more private life than many TV stars.

Taking on the Role of Kate McCann

The disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann during a family holiday in Portugal became a global news story and remains officially unsolved, making it one of the UK's most well-known missing persons cases. For Laura, portraying Kate McCann meant capturing not only grief and fear, but also the immense psychological pressure Kate faced when she herself became the focus of suspicion. The Channel 5 drama centres specifically on the period in 2007 when Portuguese authorities named Kate an 'arguido', putting her under formal suspicion. Kate later described the experience as deeply traumatic, with the couple facing intense media attention and public speculation while still searching for their daughter.

TV bosses behind Under Suspicion: Kate McCann said the drama aims to explore the emotional toll of the investigation and the scrutiny placed upon the McCanns during that period. Unlike many true crime dramas focused heavily on police procedure, the programme instead centres on Kate's experience as a mother caught in the middle of a global media storm.

Talking about the shock of being offered the role, Laura said: 'I was stunned because at my first meeting with our director, I already had a strong sense of how I'd want to approach the role, an opinion I gambled on sharing at that time because I felt there was no other way for me to do it respectfully. So, when I was offered the role, yes, I was stunned but also relieved that as a team our views were aligned in approaching such an important story.'

The McCann Case

Kate and Gerry McCann have repeatedly denied any involvement in their daughter's disappearance and were officially cleared by Portuguese authorities in 2008. Asked if she felt the weight of that responsibility of the role, Laura said: 'No. But I did feel the weight to be truthful and authentic to the script, which was so brilliantly written. But I also felt a huge responsibility toward Kate, of course. I thought of her and Madeleine every minute of every day while filming.'

She went on to say she remembered the disappearance of Madeleine when it became national news. 'I have two children who were a similar age at the time and it terrified me. It was shocking. It's still shocking,' she recalled. Under Suspicion: Kate McCann is on 5 on Wednesday May 20 at 9pm.
