Gen Z Reveals Why They Love Going to the Cinema
Gen Z on Why They Love the Cinema Experience

A new survey has shed light on why Generation Z holds a deep affection for the cinema, challenging assumptions that younger audiences prefer streaming at home. The research, conducted by the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, found that 78% of 18- to 25-year-olds in the UK enjoy going to the movies, with many citing the unique experience as a key factor.

Escapism and Social Bonding

According to the survey, the primary reasons for Gen Z's love of cinema are escapism (cited by 62%) and the opportunity to socialise with friends (58%). The big-screen experience, including picture and sound quality, was also highly valued, with 45% of respondents saying it enhances their enjoyment.

“There’s something magical about sitting in a dark room with strangers, all sharing the same story,” said one respondent. “It’s a collective experience you can’t replicate at home.”

Preference for Blockbusters

The survey also revealed that Gen Z tends to favour blockbuster films, with superhero movies and franchises like Marvel and Star Wars being the most popular genres. However, independent and arthouse films also have a following, particularly among older Gen Z members.

Interestingly, 67% of respondents said they would be willing to pay more for a premium cinema experience, such as recliner seats or enhanced sound systems.

Streaming vs. Cinema

Despite the rise of streaming services, Gen Z sees cinema as a complementary activity rather than a competitor. Many said they use streaming to discover new films but prefer the cinema for big releases. “Streaming is convenient, but it’s not an event,” noted another participant.

The findings come as cinema attendance in the UK has been recovering post-pandemic, with younger audiences driving growth. Industry experts believe that understanding Gen Z’s preferences is crucial for the future of film exhibition.

“This generation values experiences over possessions,” said a spokesperson for the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund. “The cinema offers a shared experience that aligns perfectly with their social and emotional needs.”
