Elizabeth Debicki Risks Wardrobe Malfunction at Met Gala in Vera Wang Gown
Elizabeth Debicki's Met Gala Wardrobe Malfunction Risk

Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki risked a wardrobe malfunction as she stepped onto the Met Gala red carpet on Monday evening in New York City. The theme of this year's event – widely considered the Super Bowl of celebrity red carpets – is Costume Art, while the dress code is Fashion Is Art.

Grecian Goddess Vibe

The Crown star, 35, executed the brief perfectly with a decidedly Grecian goddess vibe. Elizabeth, who also served as a member of the Gala Host Committee, wore a custom Vera Wang gown that clung perfectly to the actress's svelte form. However, Elizabeth was lucky not to suffer a wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet, with the dress' open panels under the arms exposing some sideboob.

Featuring a halter neck, the striking dress also boasted a thigh-high split that flaunted Elizabeth's lithe legs. It was finished with a dramatic plain black train that was gathered at the hip and flowed into an oversized, floor-sweeping sash.

Footwear and Accessories

When it came to footwear, Elizabeth certainly kept the Greek mythology theme going. She controversially wore a pair of flat, strappy gold sandals, which are rarely seen on the red carpet. She left her flaxen locks down for the occasion, while choosing to adorn her head with a very special accessory.

Elizabeth wore a historic tiara that dates back to 1957. It was commissioned for American socialite Betsey Cushing Whitney when her husband, Ambassador John Hay Whitney, was presented to Queen Elizabeth II at the Court of St James. The Verdura Feather Tiara was inspired by the 1907 US $10 gold coin, features an impressive 1,223 diamonds and weighs a formidable 28.32 carats.

Red Carpet Presence

Elizabeth exuded poise as she walked the red carpet with her dress's designer, Vera Wang. It comes after Elizabeth was the subject of an Ozempic joke made by actress Jennifer Coolidge at the 2025 Emmy Awards in September.

Jennifer was referring to having won two consecutive Emmys for her scene-stealing supporting role as needy and self-absorbed heiress Tanya McQuoid-Hunt in the first two seasons of HBO hit drama, The White Lotus. 'We were all supposed to go on a trip to Ibiza and I found out that I wasn't included,' Coolidge continued. 'And the only reason I knew that was because Elizabeth Debicki and I have the same Ozempic dealer. At least hers is working! But now that I think about it, winning the Emmy, I think it might have been the worst thing that's ever happened to me.'

Emmy Win

Elizabeth won her first Emmy award in 2024 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown. The star looked elated as she stepped onto the stage to accept her statuette from Only Murders in the Building star Da'Vine Joy Randolph at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Accepting the award, Elizabeth revealed that superstition had prevented her from writing an acceptance speech beforehand. 'I didn't write anything down because I'm very superstitious and now I'm in a real pickle,' the actress joked.

More recently, Elizabeth ensured all eyes were on her at the Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art exhibition gala dinner in London in March. She turned heads in a naked torso illusion dress as she posed up a storm at the star-studded event. The striking ensemble featured a high neckline, sleeveless design and a figure-hugging bodice adorned with the bold torso print. Letting the dress take centre stage, Elizabeth elevated her height with black pointed slingback heels and accessorised with statement gold earrings. For the glamorous evening, The Crown star swept her blonde tresses into an elegant updo.

Mastering Diana's Voice

Elizabeth - who played Princess Diana in the final years of her life in the fifth and sixth seasons of The Crown, revealed in 2024 that she initially had 'anxiety' over mastering the iconic Royal's distinctive voice. 'What you as the actor playing that character owe the audience is a very specific sonic imprint,' she revealed on Variety's Actors on Actors series. 'I felt a huge responsibility to get as close to it as I could. I've lived in London a long time, so my Australian accent is kind of transmorphed anyway.' Elizabeth continued, 'But of all the accents I've ever learned to do… For Diana, it felt like a music. And that music and that rhythm was so far from how I sense myself as a person. So I worked extremely hard.'
