Blaydon Race 2026: A Geordie Celebration of History and Culture
The Blaydon Race is set to return on June 9, 2026, marking its 44th edition. This iconic event, inspired by Geordie Ridley's famous folk song "Blaydon Races," brings together thousands of runners and spectators for a unique celebration of Tyneside heritage.
Race Details
The 5.9-mile route starts at 7:15 PM on Newcastle Quayside and ends in Blaydon. It closely follows the journey described in Ridley's song, passing landmarks such as Scotswood Road and the site of Armstrong's factory. The race has been held annually since 1981, except during the pandemic, and is organized by Blaydon Harrier & Athletics Club.
What to Expect
Road closures will be in effect along the route, including two bridges. Spectators are encouraged to line the streets, where bands and drummers provide entertainment. Participants who complete the run receive a Geordie Supper and a T-shirt, with trophies awarded for various categories.
Honoring Bob Houston
This year's race is dedicated to the late Bob Houston, a former organizer and president of Blaydon Harriers, who passed away earlier in 2026. His contributions to the event are remembered with this tribute.
Community and Culture
The Blaydon Race is more than a running event; it symbolizes Tyneside pride, blending North East heritage with the modern running community. For more information, including the weather forecast, visit ChronicleLive's dedicated coverage.
