This month, theatre lovers have a rare opportunity to enjoy a Tony-nominated Broadway hit from the comfort of home. Among the highlights is the fizzy comedy Fallen Angels, starring Rose Byrne and Kelli O'Hara, available from 5 June on BroadwayHD. The play, a revival of Noël Coward's classic, has earned five Tony nominations, and the two leading ladies are pitted against each other at the awards ceremony.
Fallen Angels
Livestreams of current Broadway hits are exceedingly rare, making this one of the hottest tickets of the season. In this 100th birthday revival, Byrne and O'Hara play friends who nervously await the arrival of a mutual former lover, knocking back cocktails with witty repartee. The production has been praised for its sparkling performances and elegant staging.
Romeo and Juliet
For ballet enthusiasts, the legendary pairing of Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev in Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet is available on BBC iPlayer. The 1965 Royal Opera House production reportedly received 43 curtain calls, and the performance remains a masterpiece of tender partnering and dramatic stagecraft, set to Prokofiev's powerful score.
Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway
With Jonathan Larson's rock opera returning to London this autumn, a timely rewind to the 2008 Broadway staging is available on Prime Video. This filmed version surpasses the 2005 movie, featuring Renée Elise Goldsberry as a captivating Mimi in her duet Light My Candle with Will Chase.
Oklahoma!
Before his iconic roles as Wolverine and Jean Valjean, Hugh Jackman played the baritone cowboy Curly in Trevor Nunn's rousing 1998 National Theatre production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's first musical. Newly added to NT at Home, this performance showcases Jackman's "virile and melodious" voice, as noted by critic Michael Billington.
The Audience
Helen Mirren reprises her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Peter Morgan's West End play The Audience, available on NT at Home from 2 June. The 2013 production imagines private conversations between the monarch and eight prime ministers, offering a witty and insightful look at constitutional monarchy.
Flip!
Milli Bhatia directs Racheal Ofori's radio adaptation of her satirical stage play, about two content creators experimenting with a new app that promises to expand their reach but tests their friendship. This sparky comedy, available on BBC Sounds, gives serious attention to the combative online world.
Cyrano de Bergerac
As Adrian Lester's RSC Cyrano arrives in London this month, past productions are worth revisiting. The 2007 US revival by David Leveaux, starring Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner, is available on BroadwayHD. The New York Times praised its "rapier wit."
François Chaignaud: Petites Joueuses
Choreographer François Chaignaud created a four-hour carnivalesque performance in the Louvre in 2024, accompanying an exhibition on medieval fools. A half-hour film of this unique event is available on Arte.TV, offering a glimpse into the museum's artistic depths beyond recent headlines about disrepair and a daylight jewellery heist.
