An Antiques Roadshow guest was left completely stunned after discovering the true worth of a treasured family heirloom. The much-loved BBC programme returned on Sunday evening (June 21) and revisited the magnificent Beaumaris Castle on the island of Anglesey, north Wales.
Members of the public were eager to present their most prized possessions for expert valuation, and matters took an unexpected turn when jewellery expert Joanna Hardy encountered an 'extraordinary' piece of jewellery.
Expert's Initial Reaction
Casting her eyes over the breathtaking gold bracelet, Joanna remarked: 'This bracelet is just glistening in the sun here', before adding, 'And we've got the gold nuggets which is as if they'd come out of the ground. I mean they just look extraordinary.'
The guest went on to explain how she came to own the piece, saying: 'This was a bracelet that my grandfather gave to my grandmother. And my grandfather worked in Segovia, in Colombia in the Frontino mines in the '30s and '40s. He was an engineer so I don't believe he mined those from hands, but I think he must have got those from there.'
Historical Context and Valuation
Joanna then explored the history of the piece further, noting: 'It would have been ahead of its time for the '30s. If we think about '30s jewellery and the Art Deco jewellery and its diamonds and it's all very geometric.' The guest also produced photographs of her grandparents taken in Colombia. Reflecting further on the bracelet, Joanna enthused: 'It's just got that raw energy about it. I love it when I wear it.'
Upon examining the piece, Joanna delivered her assessment. She stated: 'If this bracelet came to auction, I think it would fetch in the region of £5,000.'
Guest's Astonished Reaction
The guest was clearly astonished. 'Wow,' she remarked, before hesitating, 'Okay, wow... that's quite a lot more than I thought.' She continued, 'Oh, everybody says that I know. But really, that's a lot more than I thought. Thank you very much!'
Thrilled by the guest's response, Joanna beamed and announced: 'Oh, you've made me tingle as well!'
Antiques Roadshow airs Sunday on BBC One, with episodes also available to watch on iPlayer.
