Wrexham AFC has come under fire from Welsh football supporters for selling England-themed merchandise in their club shop during the World Cup. One fan went as far as to claim the club was 'having a meltdown'.
England Hats on Sale
The club shop was offering white baseball caps featuring the Wrexham badge on the front and a St George's Cross on the side. The England hat was displayed alongside caps bearing flags from other countries, including Argentina, New Zealand, Thailand, and Canada—the home nation of Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds.
Since the takeover by Hollywood stars Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham has attracted new fans globally. However, the decision to sell the white hats with the St George's cross at the Racecourse Ground has been labeled an 'own goal' by some.
Fan Reactions
One person commented: 'Please tell me this is an AI wind up.' Another added: 'They're having a meltdown.' A third said: 'Half and half hats is a new low.'
Not everyone was opposed, though. An English Wrexham supporter wrote: 'Am I missing something here? What's so bad about this? I'm English and I live in Wrexham and go to Wrexham games.' Another social media user noted: 'There's also one with the New Zealand flag on it… likely to have every other flag on others as well! What's the big deal?'
Availability
The England hats, priced at £25, were not listed for online purchase on the club store, though other versions—such as those for Sweden, Australia, Finland, and Greece—were available online.
