Tommy Fleetwood's bid to win The Open Golf Championship on his home turf has drawn support not only from Merseyside but also from across the Atlantic. The 35-year-old from Southport has stayed in contention over the first two days at Royal Birkdale, trailing leader Lucas Herbert by just four shots. Fleetwood is currently at four under par and tees off at 2.35pm on July 18.
Local Pride and Global Appeal
The Evertonian has the backing of Merseyside, with local fans expressing pride in their hometown hero. Teri Apps, 65, from Formby, was in attendance with Venu Singh and said: "He's one of our boys isn't he. He's a local lad and he's very down to earth. Everybody loves Tommy."
But Fleetwood's appeal extends far beyond the region. Zach Sykes from Ontario, Canada, who is often told he resembles Fleetwood, said: "I'd like to see Fleetwood make some moves. That'd be nice. I work at a golf club back home and I get that lots [that he looks like Fleetwood]. It's a good look, hey."
Why North America Loves Tommy Fleetwood
Patty Fay, 70, and Mike Fay, 63, travelled from Florida to Merseyside on a cruise ship. After world number one Scottie Scheffler, they were also backing Fleetwood to win. Patty said: "He's a true gentleman. We love him."
Mike shed light on why Fleetwood is so popular in North America, attributing it to his underdog story and perseverance. He said: "Tommy has become very beloved in the United States. He's a really good guy. A lot of it had to do with that he came so close to winning tournaments over there and then eventually he did. He won the end of year tournament. Even watching him on TV over the past few days, you can see how much people are rooting for him."
A Lifetime Dream for Visitors
The husband and wife also spoke about their love for Merseyside. Patty said: "We love it. Everyone is so nice, friendly and accommodating. This is a lifetime trip. A lifetime dream."
