Skirting boards can stay cleaner for longer with a simple household item: tumble dryer sheets. DIY expert Ken Long explains that wiping skirting boards with these sheets creates a protective layer that neutralises static electricity and repels dust, pet hair, dander, and pollen for weeks or even months.
Why Skirting Boards Get Dusty So Quickly
In summer, open windows let in fresh air but also increase dust. Static electricity builds up on surfaces when the air is dry, as there is no moisture to carry the electrical charge away. Skirting boards, often made of wood or plastic, generate significant static and naturally attract dust, which falls downwards and clings to them. This static also pulls in pet hair, dander, and pollen, making rooms look grimy despite regular cleaning.
The Simple Solution: Tumble Dryer Sheets
Ken Long, a DIY expert, recommends using standard tumble dryer sheets. He said: "Have you ever used dryer sheets to clean your baseboards? Well, maybe you should. This is going to help reduce dust and pet hair buildup on your baseboards. Take a standard dryer sheet, and wipe across the ridges on your baseboards. The film on the dryer sheet will create a layer on your baseboard that will help keep dust and pet hair off your baseboards for months."
Dryer sheets are coated with fabric softener and anti-static compounds that prevent clothes from sticking in the dryer. When applied to skirting boards, they neutralise existing static charge and leave a thin film that repels future static, preventing dust accumulation.
Why Dryer Sheets Work Better Than Fabric Softener
Fabric softener in liquid form can also reduce static, but it leaves a sticky residue that attracts more grime. Dryer sheets, however, create a very thin, nearly invisible layer that acts as a protective barrier without stickiness. This barrier repels dust effectively for much longer.
How to Apply Dryer Sheets to Skirting Boards
First, deep-clean the skirting boards with a damp cloth and soapy water to remove existing dust. Vacuuming the floor nearby also helps. Then, take a dryer sheet—used ones still contain enough anti-static ingredients—fold it into a small pad, and wipe it along the top edge, front, and corners of the skirting boards. The effect can last for weeks or months, depending on factors like fans or air conditioning, which circulate dry air and increase static. Occasional reapplication with dryer sheets reduces dust buildup, meaning less frequent cleaning.
