The final television performance of actor James Van Der Beek will reach audiences this summer, months after his tragic passing from cancer. The show, titled 'Elle,' is a prequel to the beloved 'Legally Blonde' film franchise and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on 1 July 2026.
A Poignant Final Role
In 'Elle,' Van Der Beek portrays Dean Wilson, a mayoral candidate and school district superintendent. The series, produced by Reese Witherspoon, follows a young Elle Woods, played by Lexi Minetree, during her high school years before Harvard. Van Der Beek filmed his scenes in May 2025, marking his last recorded work for television.
A Courageous Battle
James Van Der Beek died on 11 February 2026 at the age of 48 after a two-year struggle with colorectal cancer. He was diagnosed in August 2023 after noticing changes in his bowel movements and publicly announced his condition in November 2024.
In a statement, his wife Kimberley expressed: "Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace." She described him as a devoted husband, father, and friend who faced his illness with remarkable strength.
Financial Strain and Legacy
The family has faced significant financial challenges due to medical expenses. In November 2025, Van Der Beek auctioned personal items from 'Dawson's Creek,' where he famously played Dawson Leery, to help cover treatment costs. Following his death, the family launched a GoFundMe campaign to support his wife and six children.
Kimberley noted: "The costs of James's medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and ensure the children can continue their education."
Remembering an Icon
Van Der Beek rose to fame in the late 1990s on 'Dawson's Creek,' starring alongside Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson. Reflecting on his cancer diagnosis, he once said: "The trickiest thing is there are so many unknowns with cancer. As someone who likes answers, not knowing is one of the hardest things. I have a lot to live for."
His final role in 'Elle' serves as a lasting tribute to his career, blending his talent with the enduring appeal of the 'Legally Blonde' universe. The show's release will provide fans with a final opportunity to see his work, while his family continues to navigate their loss and financial burdens.
