The Real Thing, the band behind one of the biggest hits of the 1970s, are thrilled that their number one single 'You To Me Are Everything' has found a new audience thanks to a Pampers television advertisement. The catchy track, which topped the charts 50 years ago, has been revived in the nappy commercial featuring a cover by UK singer-songwriter Chelsey Johnson.
New Lease of Life Through a Nappy Ad
Band member Chris Amoo says the advert has driven younger people to seek out the original version and discover The Real Thing, who became the UK's most successful black group. He said: 'You To Me... is getting used for the Pampers advert at the moment, you know, which is really nice.. babies nappies! But it means a lot of young people are appreciating us now. We never imagined in a million years we'd be sat here 50 years on seeing the song have same effect on people. It is such a joyous song.'
Amoo added: 'You know, it's probably one of the most popular songs ever. It's been covered by loads of artists and it gets played at weddings all over the world. The song is just enormous. And even if people don't remember the name of the band, they certainly remember the song. There's never been a time when we couldn't sing that song in concert simply because we valued our lives too much!'
Continuing as a Duo After Losses
The Real Thing – who also scored hits with 'Can't Get By Without You' and 'Can You Feel The Force' – are still performing with original members Chris Amoo and Dave Smith. Sadly, fellow singers Ray Lake, Kenny David and Chris' brother Eddie have passed away. However, the remaining stars were adamant that they stay as a duo and not add new members to the line-up. Chris explained: 'They can never be replaced so what is the point in trying? I always say, “would you rather see the original people who sang those songs and who might be a little bit long in the tooth but they are the ones that brought you the love? Would you rather see them performing it or would you rather have a tribute act”?'
