Tamzin Outhwaite Shares Insights on Family and Personal Choices

In an exclusive interview, actress Tamzin Outhwaite, 55, opens up about her experiences as a parent of a transgender child and her recent decision to undergo a non-surgical facelift alternative. The former EastEnders star, known for her role as Mel Owen, emphasizes the importance of diversity and representation in the arts while reflecting on her family's journey.

Supporting Her Transgender Son's Journey

Tamzin Outhwaite's eldest child, Flo, came out as transgender at around age 10 or 11, and now at 17, the family has navigated what she describes as a "long, long journey." Speaking candidly, Tamzin highlights that while there were challenging times, the process has brought them closer as a unit. "It's been a long journey, a very long journey, but we're in a great place now," she says. "I'm just happy that he's happy, and that's how I feel at the moment. He's thriving, absolutely thriving."

She stresses that Flo's transgender identity is not the most defining aspect of his character, noting his talents as an actor, singer, writer, and director. Family therapy sessions played a crucial role in helping Tamzin understand Flo's experiences, leading to a positive outcome for everyone involved. However, she respects Flo's boundaries, only discussing him on specific platforms like the Parenting Hell podcast, which is his favorite.

Addressing Transphobia and Promoting Compassion

As a proud parent, Tamzin uses her platform to advocate for understanding and compassion towards transgender individuals. She condemns hate directed at trans people, emphasizing that diversity means reflecting real life in media and the arts. "Diversity to me means seeing every representation, if possible, on screen, on stage and in the arts generally. It's about reflecting real life. That's what audiences connect with," she explains.

Opting for a Non-Surgical Facelift Alternative

Beyond family matters, Tamzin has been open about her personal choices, including a recent high-tech skin-lifting treatment. She clarifies that she has never had a surgical facelift or injectables, instead opting for a series of advanced treatments called NeoGen. "I had eight to 10 treatments over the space of a year. So I call them intense facials rather than a non-surgical facelift," she says. This approach has boosted her confidence, making her feel younger without invasive procedures.

Balancing Career and Personal Life

Tamzin continues to balance a busy career with parenting her two children, Flo and 12-year-old Marnie, from her previous marriage to actor Tom Ellis. Currently starring in the UK tour of Abigail's Party as Beverly, she is immersed in theatre life, with performances scheduled in Bath, Malvern, Cambridge, Leicester, Brighton, and Richmond. She also hints at upcoming television projects set for release in the summer, though details remain under wraps.

Regarding a potential return to EastEnders, Tamzin jokes about coming back as a ghost, referencing past character revivals like Kathy Beale and Angie Watts. "Would I go back? Only if Mel were a ghost," she laughs, adding that it would be "quite nice to go back as an old lady ghost."

Embracing Fitness and Self-Care

Despite a hectic schedule, Tamzin prioritizes fitness and self-care, even while navigating menopause. She believes in a balance between discipline and kindness towards herself, a philosophy she applies to all aspects of her life. This holistic approach has helped her maintain well-being amidst the demands of acting, presenting, and parenting.

In summary, Tamzin Outhwaite's interview reveals a multifaceted perspective on family, personal growth, and career, showcasing her resilience and commitment to authenticity in both her public and private life.
