Spencer Matthews Admits Vogue Williams Would Have Left Him Over Drinking

Reality television personality Spencer Matthews has openly confessed that he believes his wife, presenter Vogue Williams, would have ended their marriage if he had persisted with his excessive drinking habits. The 37-year-old former Made in Chelsea star, who previously stated he "could have died" during the peak of his alcohol consumption, married Williams in June 2018 and has been candid about his struggles with booze.

A Turning Point During Pregnancy

Matthews disclosed that a significant "divide" emerged in their relationship while he continued drinking, and he first recognised his habits were abnormal when Williams became pregnant with their first child. The couple now share three children: seven-year-old son Theodore, five-year-old daughter Gigi, and three-year-old son Otto.

Speaking on the On the Mend with Matt Willis podcast, Matthews revealed: "I was very aware that if I carried on with my drinking and bad habits, that she would get bored, and she would leave me. And I knew that, and she never made that a thing."

He continued: "She never sat me down and gave me some kind of ultimatum or anything like that. But I could feel it. I could feel that she was a bit disappointed in me."

Fatherhood Highlighted the Problem

Matthews explained that the birth of their first son Theodore illuminated his drinking issues. "I think the light was shone on my boozing when she fell pregnant with our firstborn, Theodore," he said. "He made a big difference to our relationship because what felt like joint fun became solo fun quite quickly because she stopped drinking completely. I just carried on, and it created this kind of divide."

This separation made him question his behaviour for the first time. Matthews, who once consumed ten pints of Guinness daily, described how Williams noticed his solo drinking, leading to introspection. "She's like, 'You're drinking on your own'. And I'd be like, 'Yeah, because you're pregnant?' And she'd be like, 'Well, because I'm not drinking, do you have to drink?'" he recalled. "You eventually begin to think, why am I drinking on my own? And you begin to question stuff."

Career and Personal Struggles

His drinking was exacerbated by his role on the E4 reality show, where he was known for alcohol-fuelled partying and dramatic relationships. Matthews previously discussed his decision to quit alcohol on Vogue's Taboo Talk podcast, citing his former career in trading as a contributing factor. "I was a trader at ICAP and we would drink five to 10 pints every single day and then take clients out at night. If you couldn't do that, you wouldn't get the job," he explained.

With Williams' support, Matthews reached a pivotal moment. "I had a moment of clarity when I was drinking on my own at night if Vogue wasn't around. All of a sudden I was going to bed drunk," he shared. "One night, when I was alone, I had a bottle of whiskey and struggled to get myself to bed. I remember waking up the next day and I thought, 'I don't need this in my life.'"

Transformation and Current Balance

Matthews acknowledged the severe consequences he faced. "It's not like I just fancied giving up drinking. I could have lost you, I could have lost work, I could have died - not to be overly dramatic about it, but that's the way it was heading," he stated.

Today, he no longer considers himself an alcoholic and drinks moderately. "Before, having one glass would have turned into ten and then I'd be out all night," he said. "I'm sober most of the time now. I've gone from problem-drinking on a daily basis to having a drink if I feel like it very irregularly. I no longer see it as a problem. I have great balance in my life."

Addressing Relationship Rumours

This revelation follows recent public displays of affection between the couple during a family holiday in St Barts, where they were seen sharing a kiss on the beach. The holiday comes after Williams dismissed speculation about marital difficulties in November, when they did not publicly celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary.

Williams has consistently denied split rumours, telling The Sun: "When he left our podcast, everyone was like, 'What's going on?'" She expressed concern about their children hearing false gossip at school.

In an Instagram post, Williams clarified: "It’s with great sadness that I have to let you know that Spen and I are NOT breaking up! I usually avoid addressing baseless and cruel rumours, but this just keeps coming up. We’re very happily married and in love."
