A Spanish woman living in the UK has opened up about the confusion her name causes when she introduces herself to British people. Soraya, who moved to London a few years ago, goes by the nickname Sory in Spain, but in the UK, it is often mistaken for the word 'sorry'. She shared her experience in a TikTok video, explaining that when she says 'I am Sory', people think she is apologising.
The Name Dilemma
Soraya explained that in Spain, shortening her name to Sory is natural, just as Matthew becomes Matt in the UK. However, in Britain, the nickname sounds identical to the common apology. She described awkward moments at events when her name is on a list and she says, 'Hi, I am Sory', leaving British people puzzled but too polite to comment.
Social Media Reactions
Viewers offered suggestions such as using 'Sora' or 'Raya' instead, while others shared similar experiences. One commenter noted that their Polish name Ola was confused with 'hola' in Spain. Soraya joked, 'I am Sory, and I am sorry too.'
