Sixpence None the Richer have cancelled all remaining tour dates for 2026 following the death of their bassist Justin Cary, who died last month at age 50 after suffering a stroke. The band had been scheduled to perform a string of shows across the UK beginning in September.
Band Announces Cancellation on Social Media
Confirming the news online, the band said they were “taking time out” after Justin’s death. In a statement, they wrote: “We are completely heartbroken over the tragic and untimely loss of our bandmate, brother-in-arms, and friend for 30 years, Justin Cary.”
The group added: “The past three years had been full of international tours, recording new music, and an even further deepening of the joy of making music together. We were looking forward to connecting with new and old fans around the world this summer and fall, but for now we need time to be still and grieve.”
Fans and Friends Pay Tribute
Justin Cary had been receiving treatment at Albany Medical Center in New York after suffering a stroke. He underwent two surgeries and was placed in intensive care. The musician rose to fame with Sixpence None the Richer, a band formed in Texas before settling in Tennessee. They are best known for hits such as “Kiss Me,” “Breathe Your Name,” and covers of “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and “There She Goes.”
Long-time friend and collaborator Philip Madeira paid tribute on X, writing: “A world class musician, to be sure, but more so a great human being. I was lucky enough to join his band Sixpence None The Richer for some shows in recent months. He was the musical director, and I needed his kindness during rehearsals where I certainly felt like I was drowning. His encouragement buoyed me, and thankfully I rose to the occasions… Be good to each other; you might be the buoy for someone who’s in over their head.”
Band’s Heartfelt Message to Fans
In their statement, the band also shared: “Hundreds of pictures. Thousands of memories, 30 years worth. Thank you, Justin. There’ll never be another you, sir. No one could pack a suitcase better or make us laugh harder. We don’t know what is ahead, we never do, really. But for now, we must grieve our brother. Prayers are welcome for us all, especially his beautiful wife, Linda. We love you all so much and will see you again.”
