Safiyya Vorajee: Stop Saying Another Baby Will Fix Me

Safiyya Vorajee's Heartfelt Plea to Fans After Daughter's Tragic Death

Safiyya Vorajee, the 36-year-old ex-partner of reality TV star Ashley Cain, has made an emotional appeal to her followers, asking them to cease suggesting that having another baby will alleviate her profound grief. This poignant message was shared in a candid Instagram clip on Wednesday, marking five years since the devastating loss of their infant daughter, Azaylia.

The Tragic Loss of Azaylia Cain

Safiyya and Ashley, now 33, endured the unimaginable tragedy of losing their eight-month-old daughter, Azaylia, in April 2021. The little girl had been bravely battling a rare and aggressive form of acute myeloid leukaemia, which had led to tumours developing on her lungs, stomach, and kidneys. Despite undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant at Birmingham Children's Hospital, Azaylia sadly passed away, leaving her parents heartbroken.

Safiyya's Candid Explanation on Healing

In the deeply personal Instagram video, Safiyya addressed the frequent and sensitive question she receives: "When are you going to have another baby?" She expressed that there is no urgency for her to even consider this, emphasising that grief is not something that can be quickly mended or replaced. "I think people often assume that after loss, you're supposed to rebuild quickly or somehow fill a space that can never actually be filled," she shared. "But the truth is, I'm still learning how to live again."

Safiyya detailed her journey of healing, which has involved therapy, confronting her pain, and rebuilding her life both emotionally and financially. "I've had to take the time to heal the parts of me that were completely broken," she explained. "Even before thinking about another baby, I needed to find myself again to feel whole enough, to even consider being in a relationship, let alone bringing another life into this world."

The Impact of Insensitive Questions

Alongside the video, Safiyya captioned the post, highlighting how raw and painful such inquiries can be. "It's something I've been asked for years now, and I'm always a bit taken aback when people do ask… because it's so raw," she wrote. "The curiosity behind it can have an impact, and it does hurt." She stressed that losing a child is not akin to replacing an object or moving past a chapter; it fundamentally alters a person. "It breaks you in ways people can't always see," she added.

Background on the Couple's Separation

Last year, Safiyya revealed that she and Ashley split due to his turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism following Azaylia's death. She acknowledged that both struggled with their grief, but his increased drinking led to their separation. Since then, Ashley has welcomed two sons: Aliyas with a new partner in January 2024, from whom he has since parted ways, and a one-month-old son named Atlas.

Ashley's Perspective on Grief and New Fatherhood

In a previous interview with The Mirror, Ashley spoke about his sons, describing them as "absolutely gorgeous" and noting that they are helping to heal his heart. He poignantly reflected on his enduring grief for Azaylia, stating, "I hope I feel grief forever. I know that in my grief is just my love – I'll be grateful as long as I feel it." He often visits her resting place with his sons, keeping her memory alive through stories.

A Timeline of Azaylia's Brave Battle

The article also recounts the six-month leukaemia battle that Azaylia faced:

  • November 2020: Her hair began to fall out, and a bone marrow transplant was needed, but finding a match was challenging due to her mixed heritage.
  • December 2020: 80,000 people registered as stem cell donors following Ashley's public appeal.
  • January 2021: A stem cell donor was found, but her cancer returned after a third round of chemotherapy.
  • February 2021: Initially responded well to treatment, but doctors later confirmed the cancer's return.
  • March 2021: Options dwindled, and a GoFundMe campaign raised over £1 million for CAR-T therapy in Singapore, though drugs were unavailable.
  • April 2021: Tumours spread, and she was given days to live; Azaylia passed away on April 24, 2021, after seizures and breathing difficulties.

Safiyya's message serves as a powerful reminder of the long and personal journey of grief, urging greater sensitivity and understanding from the public.
