Radio presenter Roman Kemp has opened up about his plans to leave show business within the next five years, citing a heartbreaking health battle and the tragic loss of a close friend. The 30-year-old Capital breakfast show host, known for his mental health advocacy, revealed that his decision is driven by both physical and emotional struggles.
Kemp has been diagnosed with sleep apnoea, a serious sleep disorder that requires him to wear an oxygen mask at night. He described his fatigue as debilitating, verging on narcolepsy, and said doctors insisted on the mask. Joking about the situation, he remarked, 'There is absolutely nothing sexy about going back to Roman Kemp's house.'
Beyond his physical condition, Kemp's decision to step back is deeply tied to the suicide of his friend and colleague Joe Lyons in August 2020. Lyons had worked at Global Radio for nine years. Kemp has been candid about the lasting impact, saying every day he walks into the studio, he sees Joe. 'I'm quite ready to go, OK, close that door now,' he told The Mirror.
Kemp has been a vocal advocate for mental health, particularly encouraging men to talk about their emotions. He produced a BBC Three documentary, Roman Kemp: The Fight for Young Lives, following Lyons' death. Reflecting on his own struggles, he shared that he has battled depression since adolescence and sought help at age 15 after his mother's advice.
Looking ahead, Kemp plans to become a stay-at-home dad and start a dog sanctuary. He emphasised that fame was never his motivation, and he wants to enjoy what he has achieved. His last appearance on Capital's breakfast show was in March 2024, putting his health first.
