Prince Harry's return to the UK has been overshadowed by a dispute over royal accommodation and security, as a reported nickname for Harry, apparently shared by palace courtiers, has resurfaced. The King's youngest son was reportedly flying in from California to champion the upcoming Invictus Games, scheduled to take place in Birmingham in July 2027. However, his trip has been dominated by a dispute over royal lodgings and where Harry would be staying during the visit.
Accommodation and Security Row
Harry's representatives say he was offered a room at Buckingham Palace but needed to postpone his acceptance while attempting to arrange private security after he was denied police protection. The Duke of Sussex claims the Palace retracted the offer at short notice. Royal insiders maintain the offer remained available for some time with a definite deadline so personnel had sufficient time to make arrangements. They assert Harry's representatives missed the deadline, officially turned it down, and then attempted to reverse their decision too late, reports the Mirror.
There is also the controversy surrounding Harry's security arrangements — which he maintains is the explanation he travelled to the UK without his wife Meghan Markle and their children Lilibet and Archie — and Harry's failed legal action against the Mail publisher.
'Dukes of Hazard' Nickname Resurfaces
Against this context, a brutal three-word moniker shared by Harry and his uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has resurfaced. Speaking on the Sun's Royal Exclusive podcast, The Times' Royal Editor Kate Mansey said: "It was Dukes of Hazard, that's the nickname they had for Andrew and Harry because hazard, chaos followed both of them. They were the two big problems that were pointed out to me by courtiers, big hurdles for the King during his reign, alarm signals flash every time their names are mentioned."
Mansey added: "Do we expect this chaos every time Harry comes? Well yes, we do. Because I think, what we've seen, the people I'm speaking to at the Palace, it's a pattern of behaviour. For weeks beforehand there's briefings from his camp, what's going to happen, maybe the children are going to come, he wants to bring the children, then we have the familiar row over security. Despite he lost his legal battle to have automatic right to UK police security. It's always presented as a pressing and urgent issue. It seems every time he comes palace courtiers get more and more weary with it and frankly I think the public do too."
Upcoming Invictus Games Countdown
Prince Harry is scheduled to arrive in Birmingham today (Thursday, July 9) to launch the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games. He is anticipated to observe and participate in exhibition events alongside competitors from previous Invictus Games. Reports also suggested he will pay his respects at his mother's grave at Althorp House in Northamptonshire. King Charles is said to remain keen on meeting with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and his grandchildren.
