Music legend Sir Paul McCartney has made a poignant and heartbreaking admission about his decades in the public eye, revealing he often agrees with his harshest critics. The 83-year-old icon, whose career spans over sixty years with The Beatles, as a solo artist, and with Wings, shared these intimate reflections in an interview for the upcoming documentary Man On The Run.
Confronting Criticism and Self-Doubt
In a candid conversation with director Morgan Neville, Sir Paul addressed the persistent criticism he has faced throughout his life, particularly regarding the dissolution of The Beatles. He confessed to internalising negative opinions, stating, "Whenever I hear someone damning Paul McCartney, I tend to agree with them. So when everyone was saying I broke up the Beatles and I was just overbearing and all of that, I kind of bought into it." This admission highlights the personal toll of public scrutiny, even for one of the world's most celebrated musicians.
Emotional Memories of Linda McCartney
The documentary also delves into Sir Paul's emotional recollections of his late wife, Linda McCartney, who passed away in 1998. At a screening held at London's Ham Yard Hotel, he described how seeing footage of their life together triggered powerful memories. "Seeing me and Linda interacting is very special because, you know, she is not here anymore," he said, visibly moved. He credited Linda with helping him navigate the tumultuous period following The Beatles' breakup, adding, "All the stuff with the kids and Linda is lovely to see. Obviously it's emotional because she looks so beautiful. She's so cool."
Sir Paul and Linda shared four children: Heather, 63, who was adopted; Mary, 56; Stella, 53; and James, 48. He also has a 23-year-old daughter, Beatrice, from his marriage to Heather Mills, which ended in divorce in 2008. Currently, Sir Paul is married to Nancy Shevell, with whom he tied the knot in 2011.

The documentary Man On The Run is scheduled for release on February 27, offering fans a deeper look into Sir Paul's personal and professional journey. Concurrently, filming is underway for four individual biopics about each member of The Beatles, directed by Sir Sam Mendes. In these films, actor Paul Mescal, 30, will portray Sir Paul, bringing his story to a new generation. Reflecting on his life as depicted in the documentary, Sir Paul concluded, "These memories, it is like a life flashing in front of you. There are so many cool things. Even though there are some embarrassing moments, I come out of it thinking, 'Yeah, I'm OK'."
