Olivia Rodrigo altered album lyrics after Louis Partridge split

Olivia Rodrigo has revealed she made changes to her forthcoming album after her breakup with English actor Louis Partridge. The 23-year-old singer, known for hits like 'Driver's License', is set to release 'You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl in Love' on 12 June.

Speaking to the BBC, Rodrigo said she revisited the lyrics of her new song 'What's Wrong With Me', a collaboration with The Cure's Robert Smith, after the split. The track was originally about feeling depressed from missing someone, but she realised the relationship itself was the source of her upset. 'I can't eat, I can't sleep / I think you're what's wrong with me,' she sings.

Rodrigo also tweaked another song, 'Purple', which was initially a sweet love song. 'A few months after we wrote it, we revisited it and put new chords underneath it and tweaked some of the lyrics,' she said. 'It's definitely the part of the album where things start to sour and unravel.'

The album is described as 'a love story that falls apart' and 'a time capsule of a relationship'. Rodrigo and Partridge, 23, began dating in October 2023 and split in December last year.

In the interview, Rodrigo also recalled a near anxiety attack before duetting with Smith at Glastonbury last summer, but felt calm on stage. She credited 'the best sticky toffee pudding' at her hotel for giving her strength.
