A new BBC podcast series, 'Lockerbie,' is set to air on July 22, coinciding with the upcoming trial of alleged bomb maker Abu Agila Masud in Washington D.C. The six-part series, produced for Radio 4's Intrigue and BBC Sounds, aims to provide fresh revelations into one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Scottish history.
Podcast Details and Host
Journalist Myles Bonnar will host the podcast, delving into the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people. Bonnar will speak to a range of sources and gain access to secret intelligence files to explore the conspiracy and doubt surrounding the case. The podcast promises to revisit the original investigation and examine new evidence.
Trial of Abu Agila Masud
Abu Agila Masud, a Libyan man, is accused of creating the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. The explosion killed all 259 passengers and crew on board, as well as 11 people on the ground. Masud reportedly denies the allegations. His trial was postponed after a February 11, 2026 evidentiary hearing, but prosecutors hope it will end decades of speculation.
Historical Context
Previously, Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of the bombing but maintained his innocence until his death in 2012. The new podcast will revisit the case, including the role of a Libyan double agent known as 'Puzzle Piece' and the so-called Senussi Files—secret Libyan documents found in the rubble of the Libyan intelligence agency in Tripoli after a NATO bombing in 2011.
Interviews and Insights
Bonnar will interview investigators, journalists, legal experts, intelligence operators, and campaigners. He will also speak with CIA and Scottish investigators. The podcast aims to piece together the original tragedy and explore the controversies that persist.
Quote from Host
Speaking to the BBC, Myles Bonnar said: 'Lockerbie remains a story filled with questions, extraordinary characters and profound human loss. As new developments bring renewed attention to the case, this series explores the evidence, the controversies, and the enduring search for answers.'
All episodes of 'Lockerbie' will be available on BBC Sounds from July 22.
