Liverpool's summer of transition has grown increasingly complex, with Andoni Iraola now installed as the club's head coach. The Basque manager will be keen to stamp his authority and playing philosophy on his new squad. While the club embarks on a fresh era following the dismissal of Arne Slot, they will also be navigating uncharted territory in a world without Mohamed Salah. For nine years, the Egyptian served as the Reds' talisman, but he confirmed his departure at the tail end of last season, leaving Iraola to begin his Anfield adventure without the iconic goalscorer.
Mohamed Salah's Future Addressed by Ex-Red
According to former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, Salah will not reverse his decision to leave the club. There had been optimism in certain circles that Slot's exit might prompt the winger to reconsider. However, speaking to WinWin, the Croatian extinguished those faint hopes. He said: "No, it's over. Mo has a big personality too. I don't know, if they hadn't announced all of that, all the details of leaving, saying thank you and goodbye and saying goodbye, maybe yes, but now it's difficult."
Yet in a devastating revelation for supporters, Lovren reckons that Salah might have remained at Anfield had he been aware that Slot would be departing earlier. He added: "Yes, he would have stayed 100 per cent. Believe me, he would have stayed 100 per cent, I know that. But the timing was bad."
Lovren also criticised those who suggest Liverpool no longer need Salah. He stated: "Only a fool would say we no longer need him. Only a fool would say that. I mean, to say you don't need Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, when he can still perform at the highest level for another two or three years, then we have a problem understanding football."
Salah and Slot's relationship was reportedly strained, with the forward launching two public tirades during the latter half of the campaign. While it appears unlikely he will be returning to Anfield, he is yet to reveal where he will be plying his trade following his departure.
Darwin Nunez Plots Anfield Return
Ex-Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly interested in rejoining the club. The Uruguayan moved to Al-Hilal for £46.3 million in the summer of 2025, but he has struggled during his spell in Saudi Arabia. He was dropped from the squad in February following the signing of Karim Benzema. Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo is claiming that Nunez would welcome a Merseyside return.
The report also claims the appointment of Xabi Alonso at Chelsea has encouraged the Blues to register their interest. Barcelona and Newcastle United are also cited as potential suitors.
Nunez arrived at Liverpool during the 2022 summer transfer window from Benfica for an initial £64 million fee. He found the net 40 times in 143 outings for the Reds, though only featured from the start in eight Premier League matches during their title-winning campaign. Upon departing Liverpool he said: "Liverpool will always be part of who I am. I'll miss you more than words can say. To all the staff and my teammates - thank you and all the very best for the future."
