Mo Gilligan Reveals Fatherhood Insights in Rare Personal Interview
Comedian and television presenter Mo Gilligan has broken his usual silence on personal matters to discuss his journey into fatherhood, describing it as "the one part of life you never know about until you experience it." The 37-year-old entertainer, typically private about his family life, opened up during an appearance on Elizabeth Day's popular podcast, How to Fail, offering rare comments about his two children.
The Joy of Bringing Children Into His Universe
Gilligan, who welcomed a baby with his fiancée Taia Tulher last summer and has a two-year-old son named Rudi from a previous relationship with Selina Christoforou, expressed particular enthusiasm about "bringing my children into my universe." He described the profound joy and excitement of watching his children learn from him "in real time," emphasizing that fatherhood cannot be learned from books or secondhand accounts.
"Fatherhood is great," Gilligan gushed during the podcast interview. "Fatherhood is the one part of life you never know about until you experience it. No one can tell you, you can't learn it in a book. It is experiencing it in real time. I think knowing that I am my children's universe, like they learn from me, they see it from me."
A Meaningful Barbershop Moment
The comedian shared a particularly poignant anecdote about taking his son Rudi for his first haircut, reflecting on how this experience connected him to his own childhood memories. Gilligan recalled spending many Saturdays at the barbershop while his mother shopped nearby, describing it as a formative environment where he listened to "grown conversations" as a child.
"My son, he just turned two and he's at an age where he's talking and stuff, I went to take him to get his haircut for the first time last week," Mo explained. "Taking my son to get his hair cut and even before going in the shop, he was like, 'oh no, I'm scared.' I'm like, oh, okay."
He continued: "So just sitting with him and seeing him experiencing, you know, the barbershop essentially, which is a hub for the black male community where as a child, you hear conversations that you're like, 'Oh wow, these are some grown conversations.' But everyone gets treated the same once you're in the chair, you can be an elderly man, you still get a haircut, you'd be a young kid, you still get your haircut."
The Emotional Connection of Fatherhood
Gilligan described the emotional significance of seeing his son scared but finding comfort in his presence. "And seeing him scared, but also knowing he just grabbed onto me and I'm his universe. I'm bringing him into my universe. So he is experiencing this in real time, and it's just those little like gifts of life that you sit there and you go, 'Wow, this is an exciting moment. This is the universe and I'm going to show you how to do this and you're learning in real time.' That's what I really enjoy about fatherhood at the moment. I really, really, really enjoy that."
Background on Gilligan's Family Life
News emerged in September last year that Gilligan and his 28-year-old fiancée Taia Tulher had welcomed a baby over the summer, with the couple choosing to keep the infant's name and gender private. The engagement was revealed when Tulher was spotted wearing a dazzling diamond ring in her Instagram posts, with sources indicating that Gilligan had "gone the full nine yards" in his proposal after two years of dating.
However, the couple's happy news came just weeks after revelations about Gilligan's first child. In January 2024, it was disclosed that the comedian had fathered a son named Rudi during a brief relationship with model Selina Christoforou, 35. The pregnancy reportedly came as a surprise to both parties, who had met online, but they decided to proceed with keeping the child.
Previous Controversy and Reconciliation
The situation gained public attention when Christoforou posted a viral TikTok video criticizing Gilligan for what she described as insufficient support and interest in their son during his first year of life. She claimed she could "count on her fingers and toes" how many times Gilligan had seen their child in seventeen months and expressed frustration about raising their son primarily alone.
Following this public criticism, Gilligan shared a rare video of his son and addressed the situation during a stand-up performance at a south London pub in November. According to reports, he told the audience: "He's a very lovely boy. A very, very lovely boy and despite whatever you see on social media, his mum is a good mum. I'm not here to disrespect. That's the mother of my child. And I would never disrespect her publicly because she's raising my son. He's very polite. He's very kind, he's very loving."
Gilligan reportedly made lighthearted comments about child maintenance payments during the same performance, joking that if he ever appeared on Antiques Roadshow, viewers might think "the rent is due."
Looking Forward
Despite the complexities of his family situation, Gilligan's recent podcast appearance suggests he has found genuine joy and meaning in fatherhood. His reflections highlight the universal yet deeply personal nature of parenting, particularly the privilege of introducing children to meaningful cultural traditions and personal milestones.
While Gilligan and Tulher reportedly have no immediate wedding plans, with sources suggesting "the baby will keep their hands full for a while," the comedian's candid discussion marks a significant departure from his typically guarded approach to personal matters, offering fans a rare glimpse into his life beyond the stage and screen.
