The son of basketball legend Michael Jordan, Marcus Jordan, has reached a resolution in his drink-driving case, narrowly avoiding a custodial sentence after being arrested in Arizona earlier this year.
The 33-year-old, co-founder of the luxury sneaker boutique Trophy Room, entered a guilty plea to a single misdemeanour count of driving under the influence (DUI). In a deal with prosecutors, a second charge of driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the legal limit was dropped.
The Sentence and Conditions
As a result of the plea, a Scottsdale city court judge has handed down a sentence of 10 days in jail. However, Marcus will not serve time behind bars. Instead, the sentence has been suspended contingent on his successful completion of a one-year unsupervised probation period.
The court has imposed a series of stringent conditions, including:
- Mandatory installation of an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he operates for a full year.
- Completion of an alcohol screening and any recommended treatment or education classes.
- Payment of over $1,600 in fines and fees.
The Incident and Aftermath
The arrest occurred on the morning of January 10th after Marcus was pulled over by police in Scottsdale. Officers reported observing his black Mercedes SUV being driven erratically and failing to stay in its lane. During the traffic stop, he allegedly displayed signs of impairment and subsequently failed a field sobriety test.
This legal trouble comes amidst a very public and on-again, off-again relationship with Larsa Pippen, which has kept him in the celebrity spotlight. The case was formally closed following his compliance with the court's final orders this week.
