Madonna Slams A-List Ex and Reveals Strained Relationship with Daughter in Candid Album
Madonna Slams Ex, Reveals Strained Relationship with Daughter in Album

Madonna has released her most personal album in years, 'Confessions II', where she addresses her strained relationship with daughter Lourdes and takes aim at ex-husband Sean Penn. The album, produced with Stuart Price, marks her first record in seven years and follows a period of personal turmoil including a brush with death and the loss of her brother Christopher Ciccone.

Emotional Tribute to Brother Christopher

The haunting track 'Fragile' is an ode to her brother Christopher Ciccone, who died at age 63 in 2024. Their relationship was notoriously fractious, culminating in his tell-all book about her. Madonna once called him her "biggest enemy," but they reconciled after she learned of his illness. In the song, she sings: "We shared a name, a home / We shared a fragile bond / Now you're gone / We laughed, we cried / We held each other's hands." She also admits struggling to find words, adding: "This is the part I hate the most / The words inside my heart."

Healing with Daughter Lourdes

Her daughter Lourdes appears on the track 'The Test', which comes after both women spoke about healing their relationship. Five years ago, Lourdes, now 29, described Madonna as a "control freak" who "controlled me my whole life." Madonna references the friction, singing: "I know they tried to put us to the test / You're not to blame, but you need to be free now." Lourdes then sings: "You are my reason to be / what I want, or look like / what I wear, all the clothes on my back."

Nod to Sean Penn

The album also appears to reference her first husband, Sean Penn, on the track 'Bizarre', which has shades of ABBA's 'The Visitors'. She sings: "I guess you would never know my dirty little secret," and mentions the car she gave him as a wedding present, claiming he was "threatened" by her but "won't admit it."

Album Structure and Sound

Musically, 'Confessions II' unfolds like a night out, starting euphorically with deep house and club music. Opener 'I Feel So Free' sets the tone, while 'Danceteria' recalls the spoken-word swagger of 'Vogue' as Madonna declares: "Everybody here is a work of art." As the album progresses, the pace eases and the mood becomes introspective. The final third, including the lo-fi gem 'LES', belongs to the morning after, with Madonna singing: "Everything fades away, except for you."
