David Hartley, a 28-year-old father from Gateshead, died in his sleep while on holiday in Antalya, Turkey, just days after arriving on June 25. He suffered from sleep apnoea and a cardiac condition, according to his devastated family.
Hartley went to bed and never woke up, leaving behind his three-year-old daughter and a heartbroken family. The tragic news was announced by relatives on June 29, as reported by NeedToKnow.
No travel insurance leaves family facing huge repatriation bill
Because Hartley was traveling without insurance, his family now faces a substantial bill to repatriate his body to the UK. Relatives are desperately raising funds to bring him home for a proper funeral.
His cousin Megan created a GoFundMe campaign, which raised nearly £8,000 within the first 24 hours. As of the latest update, more than £9,000 has been pledged.
Family's heartbreaking plea for support
Megan said: "It is with broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our beloved cousin, David Hartley, sadly passed away while on holiday in Turkey. He was only 28-years-old and leaves behind his beautiful three-year-old daughter, along with a heartbroken family and so many friends who loved him dearly."
She added: "This is an unimaginable loss for our family. In the space of just three years, we have lost David's grandma, his mum, and now David himself. Our hearts are completely broken."
Overwhelming public response
The family have been overwhelmed by the public's generosity. Megan expressed gratitude: "We are absolutely overwhelmed. In just one day, almost £8,000 has been raised for David. We truly cannot believe the kindness, generosity, and support that has been shown. This incredible support is making such a huge difference. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Our family will be forever grateful for the love, compassion, and generosity of you all."
The funds will go toward covering repatriation costs and giving David the farewell his family says he deserves.
