Leila Farzad has emerged as one of British television's most captivating performers. The BAFTA-nominated star has garnered acclaim for her exceptional work across numerous celebrated dramas, yet her path to stardom has been anything but straightforward. Well before achieving on-screen recognition, Leila was juggling her acting aspirations with familial expectations that prioritised scholarly accomplishment above everything else.
Born in London to Iranian parents, she was obliged to gain admission to Oxford before embarking on an artistic career, a requirement she fulfilled before attending drama school. Beyond her professional work, she has also expressed strong views on her British-Iranian identity and the challenges confronting women in Iran, while her private life has periodically drawn media attention. Here's what you should know about the star.
Background
For Leila, performing was never an inevitable vocational path. Born in Westminster, London, on 30 December 1981, to Iranian parents, she grew up in a household that emphasised scholarly excellence as paramount. Before pursuing formal acting instruction, Leila's parents insisted she gain entry to either Oxford or Cambridge. She rose to that challenge by reading French and Italian Literature at Worcester College, Oxford, obtaining her degree before progressing to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for actor training.
Her British-Iranian heritage has been a defining factor throughout her life. Leila has frequently spoken about growing up straddling two cultures and the unique outlook this afforded her. In recent years, the star has also spoken poignantly about her ties to Iran, particularly regarding the country's ongoing political turmoil, and has used her platform to shed light on the experiences of Iranian women and the hardships they endure.
Career and unexpected drama axe
Her acting career began with a voice role in the third and fourth series of Channel 5's beloved animated children's programme, Peppa Pig. From 2004 to 2015, Leila provided the voices for Mummy Pony and Mummy Cat. She subsequently made her live-action television debut in an episode of ITV's Law & Order: UK in 2009.
Leila's breakthrough came when she was cast in the acclaimed series I Hate Suzie at the age of 37, after years of disappointments, rejections, and struggles to break free from typecast roles. After a succession of further roles, including Married Single Other and The Fear Index, Leila secured a part as corrupt DI Lou Slack in the BBC drama, Better. Actor Andrew Buchan also portrayed ruthless Irish gangster Col McHugh in the series.
Despite the show's popularity, it was axed after just one series. A TV insider told The Sun at the time: "Better did good business, averaging almost four million viewers an episode, and there was an appetite to learn more about the tangled lives of McHugh and Slack. But the BBC is keen to bring a slew of new shows, which means that, unfortunately, some popular dramas have to make way."
Romance
Leila wed James Maizels in October 2013, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Allegra, in 2014. The pair had been firm friends for over six years before romance blossomed between them. The actress has previously described him as a supportive spouse and a dedicated, hands-on dad to their daughter, highlighting his active role in family routines and everyday life. While she maintains a social media presence, the actress typically keeps her romantic life private.
