Legendary US newsreader Harold Greene dies aged 82

Harold Greene, the veteran Southern Californian newsreader who inspired Anchorman's Ron Burgundy, has died aged 82 after nearly 40 years in broadcasting.

A career spanning four decades

Greene was a regular on Southern Californian TV through channels ABC7, KCBS and KCAL, reporting on several significant events throughout his long career.

He collected numerous Emmy Awards, Golden Mike Awards and Edward R. Murrow Awards, and secured a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Anchorman connection

Greene's quintessential 1970s presenter appearance has frequently been mentioned as a visual reference for Will Ferrell's Ron Burgundy in Anchorman.

Ferrell previously remembered bumping into Greene in Beverly Hills, where Greene playfully enquired if Burgundy had been modelled on him. Ferrell refuted that any individual presenter influenced the role, describing Burgundy as a blend of traditional television journalists.
