Lee Ryder's 4,165-Mile World Cup Trip Hit by Hurricane Drama
Lee Ryder's World Cup Trip Hit by Hurricane Drama

ChronicleLive's Chief Newcastle United Writer Lee Ryder traveled 4,165 miles from Tyneside to Miami for England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway, but the trip was far from straightforward. A hurricane forced an unscheduled landing and an overnight stay in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.

Hurricane Disruption Forces Unscheduled Landing

The journey began with a short flight from Newcastle to Dublin, followed by an American Airlines flight to Miami. However, as the plane approached Charlotte, North Carolina, for a connection, the weather deteriorated. A local passenger remarked, "That's hurricane season for you." The pilot announced an unscheduled landing in Raleigh-Durham, where the flight was eventually cancelled after two hours on the tarmac.

With massive queues for rebooking, Ryder and other England fans scrambled to find alternative transport. He booked a flight to Fort Lauderdale for the next morning and spent the night in Raleigh, where the hotel showed signs of storm damage, with buckets catching water from the roof. The hotel waiter commented, "We're used to it! But the show must go on!"

England Fans Persevere

Despite the setback, Raleigh airport was operational the next morning, and the flight to Florida departed on time. On the JetBlue flight, Ryder watched a rerun of Spain's win over Germany, where former Newcastle star Mikel Merino scored the winner. The England fans eventually made it to Miami for the quarter-final.

Ryder noted that England fans from Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and York were present, with flags representing their clubs. One St George's Flag humorously read "Still married" after the tournament's long duration.

Dan Burn's World Cup Impact

Dan Burn, the 6ft 7in Newcastle defender, has become a popular figure at the World Cup. His journey from working at Asda and playing non-league football for Darlington to the World Cup has captured attention. Burn has made two excellent cameo appearances against Mexico and Norway, and England's backroom team trusts him to keep the squad grounded.

England now moves to Atlanta for the semi-final against Argentina. The atmosphere in Miami was electric, with a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and performances from Ellie Goulding, David Beckham, and Mick Jagger in attendance.

A Memorable Journey

Ryder concluded that the mammoth trek feels worth it, with the hope that football could be coming home. He joked that the return trip should be less eventful.
