Amanda Knox has criticised Matt Damon after the actor suggested that, for some who have been 'cancelled', jail time might be preferable. Damon made the remarks on a recent episode of Joe Rogan's podcast, saying jail is a finite punishment whereas cancel culture 'will follow you to the grave'.
Knox, who was wrongfully convicted and spent nearly four years in an Italian prison for the murder of her British roommate Meredith Kercher, responded on X: 'Another thing Matt Damon could have run by me before putting out into the world.'
In the comments, Knox argued that prison comes with its own stigma and lasting trauma, and that one does not simply 'be done with it'. Journalist Katherine Brodsky suggested some cancelled people might prefer jail to endless public excoriation, but Knox pointed out that people also commit suicide in prison.
This is not the first time Knox has taken issue with Damon. In 2021, she criticised his film Stillwater, which was inspired by her case, saying it drew unfair conclusions about her involvement in the crime.
