Former Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun received high praise from NBA icon LeBron James during the World Cup clash between the United States and Bosnia & Herzegovina. However, the 24-year-old's night ended in disappointment as he was shown a red card following a VAR check in San Francisco.
Balogun's goal and celebration
Balogun thought he had opened the scoring for the USA in the 31st minute, slotting home a left-footed effort. He immediately performed LeBron James's legendary "Silencer" celebration, which involves stomping, chest-tapping, and screaming. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, keeping the score goalless.
Undeterred, Balogun found the net again just 14 minutes later, and this time the goal stood. He repeated the celebration, and his determination paid off not only on the pitch but also on social media.
LeBron James reacts
LeBron James himself took to X to acknowledge Balogun's celebration, writing: "LFG!!!!!! THE [Silencer] HAS [landed] at the World Cup! Helluva goal there Young [king]! [salute]. GO [USA]." James famously debuted "The Silencer" in 2013 after hitting a decisive three-pointer for the Miami Heat against the Boston Celtics.
Red card and suspension
Balogun's night took a turn early in the second half when he was sent off following a challenge on defender Tarik Muharemovic. The referee initially did not show a red card but was instructed to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. After a lengthy check, the referee upgraded the decision to a red card.
Balogun had scored his third goal of the World Cup in the match, but he will now be suspended and unavailable for the USA's last-16 tie against Belgium.
