Kathy Dooley, the lead singer of the family pop group The Dooleys, has died at the age of 70 after a battle with fronto-temporal dementia. Her death was confirmed by her sister Fiona and brother Frank in statements.
Family confirms death and details of illness
Kathy died on 22 April 2026 at around 7:00 pm. She was diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia some eight years ago and had been receiving specialist care since 2019. Her brother Frank said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved sister Kathleen... She was at the heart of our family and the music we created. Her lead vocals and harmonies were loved by all."
Her sister Fiona added: "The brutal disease fronto-temporal dementia stole the last decade of her life, but in death, we remember her as she actually was – a quietly, thoughtfully, and abundantly loving person."
Career highlights with The Dooleys
Kathy began performing at age 12 alongside her siblings at a local church concert. The group, which included sisters Anne and Marie and brothers Jim, John, and Frank, released their debut single "Hands Across The Sea" in 1974. They were named Best Group at the National Club Acts awards in 1976. Their song "I Think I’m Gonna Fall in Love With You" reached number three in the charts, and "Wanted" topped the charts for nearly three months. The Dooleys disbanded in the 1990s, after which Kathy performed in musicals and pantomime.
Tributes and legacy
Frank praised Kathy's husband Andrew for ensuring she received the best possible care, as well as the staff at Parsons Grange for their exceptional attention. Fiona remembered Kathy as "warm, gentle, and empathetic with a crystalline singing voice and a tremendous sense of humour," and noted her devotion to her dogs, Elsa and Della. The family expressed gratitude for the love and memories shared by fans.
