Over 20 years after Kate Hudson first stunned audiences in a backless butter-yellow gown in the 2003 rom-com How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, the dress remains a cult classic. The scene, where Hudson's character Andie Anderson twirls for Matthew McConaughey's Benjamin Barry, is still celebrated for its timeless elegance.
The original gown was a custom Carolina Herrera design, featuring delicate straps, a plunging neckline, and a criss-cross back detail. It was paired with a gleaming Isadora yellow diamond necklace from Harry Winston. Costume designer Karen Patch worked closely with the Herrera team to create a dress that was both classic and clean, with the specific yellow shade chosen to match the diamond.
In a recent attempt to recreate the look, a fashion enthusiast found a dupe from Meshki called the 'Nadia Maxi Satin Dress With Back Cowl' in a lemon shade. The dress features a V neckline and plunging cowl back, crafted from luxe satin fabric with a subtle sheen. It was worn during a summer holiday in Morocco, providing the perfect outfit for an al-fresco dinner overlooking the sunset in Marrakech.
Kate Hudson herself has expressed her love for the dress, stating in a Vanity Fair oral history, 'I love that dress. I think that color just was one of those statement colors and was great on camera.' The gown now resides in the Costume Designer Hall of Fame, cementing its status as an iconic piece of film fashion.
