Jordan Pickford's Dad Changed Family Name After Abuse

Jordan Pickford, England's first-choice goalkeeper since 2018, might have had a different name on the back of his shirt at this summer's World Cup had his father not taken action. The surname 'Pigford' was originally the family name, but Pickford's father, Lee, changed it via deed poll after enduring harassment at school.

Father's Decision to Change the Name

Lee Pigford, as he was originally known, suffered cruel taunting and was called 'Piggy' during his school days. Determined to protect his future children from similar abuse, he legally altered the family surname to Pickford. Jordan's grandfather, Barrie, still bears the Pigford surname but remains immensely proud of his grandson's achievements.

Pickford's Rise to Stardom

Pickford progressed through Sunderland's youth system, with his parents Lee and Sue switching their allegiance from Newcastle United due to his passion for the Black Cats. After six loan spells away from the northeast, he secured a £25 million transfer to Everton in 2017, where he launched his England career. He claimed the No. 1 spot after Gareth Southgate chose him ahead of Joe Hart and has since featured in five major international tournaments.

Family Pride and Support

In a 2018 interview with the Mail, Lee Pickford said: "I'm over the moon for him, I am. I never thought he would play for England. It is the best thing he did leaving Sunderland - going to Everton was a good thing for him. He's doing good, I'm pleased for him. He's six foot four, so he's a big lad, but he's quiet. He doesn't brag or nothing. When he comes home he is the same as normal. He's a quiet kid really. I think the world of him."

England Career and World Cup Ambitions

Pickford has experienced highs and lows with England, including two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final, falling short each time. He has earned 89 caps and played a key role in England's 3-2 victory over Mexico to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. Now, under manager Thomas Tuchel, Pickford believes the squad has a winning mentality. He said: "Belief, togetherness... I think we have had that previously, but I think the manager's got that belief in us. The meetings the manager has with us, it is like you are ready to go to war. He puts that belief in you. There are different meetings he has tactically, and it is like, 'Yeah, it is go time'. We all want the same goal, we all want that end goal, and this squad he has picked, we are all in good spirits, and all in good moments in our career."
