Celebrity hairstylist John Frieda has died at the age of 75 after battling an illness, surrounded by his family. The British beauty mogul was best known for creating the Frizz Ease haircare range and building a worldwide salon empire.
Frieda passed away peacefully with his family by his side. While a precise medical condition was not disclosed publicly, close associates revealed that he died following a courageous fight with an illness.
Early Life and Rise to Fame
Born Alan Howard Frieda in London in 1951, he was immersed in hairdressing from an early age, working as a youngster in his father Isidore's salon. He later trained under the House of Leonard, swiftly advancing to assistant and styling for leading fashion titles such as British Vogue.
Frieda launched his debut salon in 1976 in his mid-20s. During this period, he became celebrated for crafting Joanna Lumley's legendary "Purdey" cut for The New Avengers, solidifying his status in British popular culture. His salon empire subsequently grew to prestigious addresses throughout London, New York, and Los Angeles.
Building the Frizz Ease Brand
In the late 1980s, working alongside American business executive Gail Federici, he co-launched his namesake hair product range. Their game-changer was specialised formulations, most notably Frizz Ease, which revolutionised everyday at-home haircare. In 2002, the products division was sold to Japanese cosmetics giant Kao Corporation, while Frieda kept ownership of his salons.
Over the course of his career, he worked with some of the world's most recognisable faces, including Princess Diana, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Marriages and Family
In 1977, Frieda wed Scottish pop star and actress Lulu in a glittering celebrity ceremony. The couple welcomed a son, Jordan Frieda, who went on to forge a successful career as both an actor and restaurateur. Despite parting ways in 1991, Frieda later revealed that the pair maintained a deep, enduring bond of affection and friendship throughout their lives.
He subsequently married Frances Avery Agnelli, an American interior designer and widow of Fiat heir Giovanni Alberto Agnelli. Together they had two children, daughter Luna and son Jackson. Frieda also played a key role in raising Avery's daughter, Asia Agnelli Lagrange, with whom he shared a warm and close fatherly relationship.
Tributes Pour In
Frieda hailed from a family with strong roots in the British entertainment and beauty world; his brother, Nigel Frieda, is a highly regarded music producer and owner of Osea Island. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, four children, and two grandchildren.
Tributes have poured in across Instagram and X following the official announcement from the John Frieda salon account. Family members, celebrity clients, longtime staff, and beauty industry figures have shared their memories. His stepdaughter, Asia Agnelli Lagrange, posted a carousel of photos together through the years, writing: "Sadly, my J has passed away. Today we lost the best man to ever exist. I share this because I know he touched the lives of so many."
The official salon statement also reflected on his impact as a guide and teacher. It read: "John was more than a mentor to us; he was a true icon of the hair industry. He was the person who taught us everything, believed in us, and made us better. His talent and passion touched so many, and his legacy will live on in every single one of us."
