Jennifer Finch, the bassist and vocalist for the 1990s grunge band L7, has died at the age of 59, just days after her bandmates publicly announced her diagnosis of an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Passing Announced by Family
A statement on her official social media account read: "We are devastated to announce the death of our partner, sister, daughter, and friend Jennifer Precious Finch. Jennifer’s impact on the world of music was seismic; her impact on our lives, even moreso." The family requested privacy, saying: "We appreciate some space to heal privately during this difficult time."
Brain Cancer Diagnosis and Surgery Complications
Just days prior, Finch's bandmates—Suzi Gardner, Demetra Plakas, and Donita Sparks—had revealed that Finch was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. She had undergone multiple surgeries but suffered serious complications, requiring extensive medical care and rehabilitation. The band launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover urgent expenses, including professional in-home nursing care, physical and speech therapy, medical equipment, and home-care expenses.
Tributes from Fans and Friends
Tributes quickly flooded in. One fan wrote: "God what awful news. She was the fiercest & just so lovely. much love." Another said: "Thank you for the love and friendship. I’ll miss our geek talks and your smile. Rest in peace you’ve earned it. Love you." A third added: "Rest in power, Jennifer. You left an incredible legacy behind."
Band's Statement on Tour
L7 had planned "The Last Hurrah Tour" with Finch, but due to her condition, she was unable to join the U.S. dates. The band stated: "Although she will not be able to join us for the upcoming U.S. dates, Jennifer has asked us to continue with the tour as planned. We will honour her request while making her care and well-being our immediate priority."
Legacy of a Grunge Icon
Jennifer Finch rose to fame as a member of L7, an all-female alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1985. The band became known for their raw sound and feminist stance, releasing albums such as "Smell the Magic" (1990) and "Bricks Are Heavy" (1992). Finch's impact on the music world was described as "seismic" by her family.
