Jason Ritter Embraces Daughter's Decision to Forgo Acting Career
In a heartfelt revelation, actor Jason Ritter has expressed his full support for his young daughter's desire to pursue a path different from her Hollywood parents. The Gravity Falls star, aged 46, and his wife, acclaimed actor Melanie Lynskey, 48, are parents to a seven-year-old daughter whose name they have chosen to keep private from the public eye.
A Sweet Family Moment
During a recent appearance on Ted Danson's podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Ritter shared a touching anecdote about his daughter's awareness of her parents' fame. "She sort of has an idea," he explained, before recounting a pivotal conversation. "There was one time where she said to us, 'Guys, is it OK that I don't want to be an actor?'" Ritter recalled with affection. "And we're like, 'Yes! Of course! We're not gonna force you into it.' That would be so horrible."
Ritter humorously added that his daughter sometimes expresses strong opinions about his work, such as wishing his character would die on the CBS reboot of Matlock, where he stars alongside Kathy Bates. "I'm like, 'No. You. Don't. Please don't say that,'" he laughed, highlighting the playful dynamic within their family.
Praising His Daughter and Wife
The actor, who has been married to Lynskey since 2020 after meeting on the set of The Big Ask in 2013, described their daughter as "so funny and weird and strange and lovely and she's the best and we feel very, very, very lucky." This admiration extends to his wife, whom he credits with playing a crucial role in his journey to sobriety.
A Journey to Sobriety
Ritter opened up about the early days of his relationship with Lynskey, revealing that she gave him an ultimatum after a year of being "on and off" together. "You can keep drinking, absolutely, but I can't be around," he remembered her saying. At the time, Ritter admitted, "I didn't really care much about myself at that point." However, the threat of losing Lynskey motivated him to change.
"I knew that if I took another sip and I started that thing over that I would lose this forever and I just could never cross that line," he reflected. "And it was easier for me to not cross that line when it was for her than for me, which is weird in hindsight. And now I'm sober for myself." Ritter has maintained sobriety for over twelve years, a achievement Lynskey praised in a 2023 joint appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, noting he has done "so much work on himself."
This story not only showcases Ritter's supportive parenting but also underscores the profound impact of personal growth and family bonds in the entertainment industry.
