James Van Der Beek's Final Days: Actor Found Silver Lining in Cancer Battle
James Van Der Beek maintained a remarkably positive attitude in his final days, prior to his tragic passing at the age of 48 on Wednesday. The actor, best known for his role as Dawson Leery on the hit television series Dawson's Creek, had been battling stage 3 colorectal cancer with courage and grace.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Just two months ago, Van Der Beek described his cancer diagnosis as the 'best thing that ever happened' to him. He explained to the Today show in December that the diagnosis forced him to make essential changes in his life, leading to a profound shift in his perspective. The actor said he heard 'a little voice' that reminded him of the silver lining the situation brought.
'You're gonna make changes in your life that you would never, ever make if you didn't have this extreme of a diagnosis,' Van Der Beek reflected. He believed these changes would ultimately add 'healthy, happy years' to his life, despite the challenges he faced.
Embracing Presence and Self-Love
In his interview with NBC correspondent Craig Melvin, Van Der Beek detailed how the diagnosis provided him with a proper mindset that positively impacted both his body and mind. 'I don't think I knew what it was to slow down before,' he admitted. 'I don't think I knew what it was to really look at everything I eat, everything I put in my body.'
The actor continued, 'I think before cancer, I took all these little, beautiful moments as part of a collective. I was just aware of everything. And now I'm able, much more, to just settle into that exact moment. So presence is really the gift that cancer's given me.'
Van Der Beek also touched on the emotional impact of his public health battle, describing it as 'overwhelming' in a good way. He was deeply moved by the kind words and well-wishes from family, friends, and fans. 'So many people told me, "I’m praying for you. I’m wishing you the best. How you doin?"' he shared. 'I never expected that. I never just stopped to appreciate what I’d done. And I will say, every time somebody says, "I’m praying for you, and I’m wishing you the best," I appreciate it.'
A Journey of Strength and Patience
Despite feeling improvements in his health, Van Der Beek acknowledged that the cancer battle was 'a longer journey than I ever thought it would be.' He said, 'It's required more of me - more patience, more discipline, more strength than I knew I had.'
The actor, who also starred in Varsity Blues, One Tree Hill, and CSI: Cyber, emphasized the importance of self-love during this time. 'The biggest change I’d say would be this journey of self love,' he added. 'What I realized was, I’m still worthy of love. My own love, God’s love.'
Family and Legacy
James Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, 44, and their six children: Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 11, Emilia, eight, Gwendolyn, six, and Jeremiah, three. Kimberly shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, writing, 'Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come.'
She concluded, 'For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.' Van Der Beek's passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from colleagues in show business, remembering him not only for his iconic roles but for his inspiring positivity in the face of adversity.
