James McAvoy's Private Marriage and Fatherhood Journey
Scottish actor James McAvoy, renowned for his roles in X-Men and Shameless, has maintained an intensely private personal life despite his Hollywood fame. The 46-year-old star recently opened up about his quiet second marriage and becoming a father later in life, offering rare glimpses into his domestic world.
Secret Wedding to Personal Assistant
McAvoy secretly married personal assistant Lisa Liberati, also 46, in 2019, just one year after they first met on the set of M. Night Shyamalan's psychological thriller Split. Liberati served as the filmmaker's assistant during production while McAvoy took the lead role. The couple's relationship blossomed away from the public eye, culminating in their private nuptials.
The actor revealed he quietly became a father for the second time four years ago with Liberati, though their child's name remains undisclosed. Speaking to The Guardian about fatherhood at 42, McAvoy shared: "Having a kid at 42 is definitely easier in some ways. I worry less. I'm a bit more philosophical. But it's also harder, because you're just older and tireder."
Lockdown Life and Domestic Bliss
During the pandemic, McAvoy and Liberati transformed their London flat into a creative sanctuary. The couple packed all their possessions into their spare room and built a makeshift recording studio. "Round about April we built a makeshift studio in my spare bedroom. Our only spare bedroom which was full of moving stuff was rammed and just full of this James made recording studio," he explained.
Liberati showcased her culinary talents throughout lockdown, whipping up cakes, doughnuts, and dishes inspired by Jamie Oliver. McAvoy demonstrated his own baking abilities when he appeared on a special Stand Up To Cancer edition of The Great British Bake Off, expressing excitement about baking for the charitable cause.
The couple eventually secured a larger London property after lockdown restrictions lifted, having been photographed viewing properties including a £3.5 million residence in September 2020.
Previous Marriage to BAFTA-Winning Actress
This marks McAvoy's second marriage following his 11-year union with BAFTA-winning actress Anne-Marie Duff, 55. The couple met and starred together in the hit TV series Shameless, welcoming their son Brendan, now 15, during their relationship.
Both actors maintained a notably private approach to their relationship and subsequent 2016 separation. In a joint statement at the time, they declared: "It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision to divorce. We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son."
McAvoy explained their privacy policy: "Me and Anne-Marie, when we were together, it was our policy not to speak about each other in public. We rarely broke that and if we did, it was for tiny things - 'Yes, we are cooking turkey this Christmas' - and that policy still stands."
Embracing New Family Dynamics
The Philadelphia-born Liberati has introduced McAvoy to her hometown, with the Scottish star acknowledging the American city feels "like a second home" to him now. The actor has embraced supporting the Phil Union sports team, posting photographs wearing team merchandise with the caption: "Let's go @philaunion."
Despite his growing family, McAvoy maintains his commitment to privacy. In a 2017 interview with Mr Porter magazine, he remarked: "My life has changed massively. At the same time, so much has stayed the same. One of the things that's stayed the same is that I still don't talk about my personal life, really."
The couple occasionally shares snapshots on Instagram, offering carefully curated glimpses into their day-to-day existence while maintaining boundaries around their private family life.
