Horner memoir reveals Geri's support during scandal

Christian Horner has opened up about his marriage to Geri Halliwell in his new memoir, Drive: A Memoir, describing how the former Spice Girl supported him when allegations threatened both his professional and personal life. The book offers a rare glimpse into the private conversations that took place as the former Red Bull team principal faced intense scrutiny.

Allegations and Investigations

In February 2024, a female Red Bull employee accused Horner of inappropriate behaviour. He denied the allegations, and an independent investigation commissioned by the team cleared him. The situation escalated when an anonymous email containing purported WhatsApp messages and photographs was circulated to figures within Formula One and the media.

A second investigation, following an appeal, upheld the original findings. Horner was cleared on both occasions, although the controversy continued to follow him. He eventually departed the team he had led for two decades.

Breaking the News to Geri

In the memoir, Horner recalls learning of the allegations during a conversation with his lawyer. He then had to explain the situation to Geri, who was at home getting the family ready for the school day.

"'This can't be right,' I said, eventually, wanting to ask more questions but not knowing where to begin," he wrote. "What was going on? The lawyer, presumably aware that a wrecking ball was being aimed at my life, explained the situation as my sense of bewilderment rose."

He went on: "In the kitchen, Geri was getting the family ready for school. When everyone had been packed off for the day, I walked downstairs and broke the news."

A United Front

According to Horner's account, Geri immediately brought calm to the situation. "Geri knew by my face that something was very wrong. 'What's up?' She frowned as I repeated what the lawyer had said. She fell silent as she listened. We both understood the implications immediately. She looked at me. 'Just tell your truth,' she said. 'That's all I can do,' I replied."

The couple put on a united display in March 2024, when Geri travelled to Bahrain during the opening race weekend of the Formula One season, just days after the leak. Dressed in her trademark white, Geri arrived to stand alongside her husband, and the pair walked hand in hand through the paddock as photographers and reporters watched.

In an interview with The Independent published in October, Horner described his wife as "phenomenal", praising the strength she showed during the controversy. "Our lives had been turned upside down, yet she found the strength and conviction to support me through an immensely difficult period, one that was undoubtedly challenging for her as well," he writes. "Her belief in me gave me the determination to move forward. At a time when my confidence was being tested, Geri provided the perspective and stability that I needed most. Without her support, I'm not sure I could have navigated those months in the same way."

Their Relationship History

Geri first met her now-husband in 2009 when she was introduced by F1 tycoon Bernie Ecclestone. However, it wasn't meant to be at the time as Christian was married to his first wife Beverley Allen and they were hoping to have their first child together. Just five years later, Christian and Geri got together just six months after Beverley had their little girl, Olivia.

Christian's parents Garry and Sara were reported to be appalled and refused to go to the couple's wedding in May 2015 at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire. They continued to support Beverley until she died in July 2025 at the age of 58 following a two-year battle with eye cancer. Christian and Geri welcomed their son, Monty, in January 2017. Geri is also mum to daughter Bluebell, from her previous relationship with screenwriter Sacha Gervasi.
