Christian Horner: Geri Halliwell marriage 'never in doubt' during F1 scandal
Horner: Marriage to Geri Halliwell 'never in doubt'

Christian Horner has said his marriage to Geri Halliwell was "never in doubt" despite intense public scrutiny following an accusation of inappropriate behaviour made by a female colleague in early 2024. At the time, the couple had been married for almost nine years.

Horner, then team principal and chief executive of Red Bull Racing, denied the claims and was later cleared of wrongdoing by two independent KCs hired by the team to investigate. The accusation still damaged his position and is seen as one of the factors behind his eventual exit from Red Bull 18 months later.

Public Solidarity in Bahrain

The accusation was widely covered by international media, leading to speculation over the state of Horner's marriage to the Spice Girls singer. Geri flew to Bahrain, the first race of the 2024 season, to be with her husband, and the pair were seen walking hand in hand in the Formula One paddock.

Despite that public display of solidarity, reports claimed Geri was upset by the accusations and speculated that their marriage might have been struggling. Speaking to The Sports Agents, Horner insisted that was never the case.

He said: "My marriage was never in doubt. Throughout it, Geri was steadfast in her support and I think your partner, your wife, is the person that you share everything with. She lived through this whole experience with me. She understood how media operated and, obviously, she's an extremely well-known person which only attracts more attention to us."

Support Through Difficult Times

Horner added: "But, upmost and foremost, she was my wife. She was an absolute rock during that period, and I would say, if anything, it's only brought us closer together."

He continued: "When you go through any kind of experience like that... I'm hugely grateful for the love and support that she provided during that difficult time, and not just on track, but obviously behind the scenes with what we had going on in the family as well."

The accusation came only months after one of the most dominant seasons in F1 history. Red Bull won all but one of the races in 2023, but even before the accusation and public storm, Horner said he wasn't as happy as he once was as things were changing behind the scenes at the team, following the death of co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in October 2022.

Exit from Red Bull

Horner continued at Red Bull until the summer of 2025, when he was abruptly relieved of his duties before later agreeing a £76 million exit package to officially depart. While he described his exit as "very brutal", Horner said he can now see the timing as something of a blessing in disguise.

He said: "I'd given over 20 years to the team. I think I'd been to 405 races in succession. I'd never missed a race. I'd missed landmark moments like the birth of my daughter and so many family things that you sacrifice in pursuit of your goals and your ambitions, and I felt a loyalty and a responsibility to the team and the people."

He added: "So, to suddenly have that overnight taken away from you was very tough. I would have never stayed anywhere that I didn't feel that I was wanted, and so if they'd have asked me to go at the end of the season, I wouldn't have stayed where I wasn't wanted. But it did feel quite brutal. But with the passage of time, in fairness, it actually probably did me a favour because there were things going on in our family. We'd had a bereavement – my daughter had lost her mum, and it gave me the time to be present with her and the family at that time."
