Dieter Brummer, best known for playing Shane Parrish in Home and Away, has died at the age of 45. His family confirmed the news after police responded to a call at his home in July 2021.
Soap stardom and a famous on-screen romance
Brummer played Shane Parrish in the Australian soap for four years between 1992 and 1996. His on-screen romance with Angel, played by Melissa George, became one of the show's most-watched storylines, with the characters later marrying.
Shane's death in 1996, from septicaemia after cutting himself on a wire on the couple's first wedding anniversary, was described by fans as "gut-wrenching". At the time of his exit, Brummer said he felt the character had run its course.
Behind-the-scenes tensions
There were rumours of a feud between Brummer and George. Brummer told Woman's Day: "We may have been love interests on the show but the chemistry was far from real! Mel was incredibly ambitious right from the outset. I think she wanted to be the next Kylie Minogue."
George later acknowledged tensions, telling the Home and Away special Endless Summer: "There was a lot of pressure on us. We had to look like the perfect darling couple in public." Co-star Ray Meagher, who played Alf Stewart, added: "I'm not sure that they got on personally 100 per cent, 100 per cent of the time."
Career change and later roles
After leaving Home and Away, Brummer set up his own window cleaning company, working at heights. He explained: "It was a pretty intense time coming out of high school to receive all this fame and adulation. I was so busy as a teenager I didn't get to join friends on trips or do a lot of the things my friends got to do."
He returned to acting in 2011, joining the cast of Neighbours as Troy Miller, and played corrupt police officer Trevor Haken in the crime drama Underbelly.
Tributes and lasting impact
His family said: "We lost our handsome, talented, funny, complicated and beloved Dieter on Saturday morning. He has left a massive hole in our lives and our world will never be the same." The Seven Network said it was "deeply saddened", adding: "Dieter was a much-loved Home and Away cast member and celebrated by Australian and international audiences."
Former co-stars also paid tribute. Emily Symons wrote on Instagram: "I can't believe this absolutely tragic news." Lynne McGranger wrote on X: "So very sad. Please reach out. Ask if people are doing okay. And tell someone if YOU'RE not okay!"
Melissa George, speaking to the Something To Talk About podcast, said: "I do watch often because obviously Dieter's no longer with us, which is just a devastation beyond comprehension. That's just too many years of him suffering that was overlooked. It really breaks my heart because he was a beautiful man."
